Separated by Distance, Connected Through Faith

Diocese of Orange observes Holy Week and Easter Virtually Garden Grove, Calif., (April 3, 2020) – The first-ever Easter services at Christ Cathedral – formerly the Rev. Robert Schuller’s world-famous Crystal Cathedral – will be celebrated virtually in keeping with COVID-19 pandemic regulations. For America’s newest Catholic cathedral, these historic events mark a different way of celebrating the year’s holiest liturgical season. These celebrations are in line with the recently-dedicated cathedral’s innovative, forward-facing vision. Faithful Catholics can participate in many languages – including Spanish, Vietnamese, and others – through livestreamed services on Facebook, Vimeo, and other platforms, both from Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove and from many of the Diocese of Orange’s 57 Catholic parishes and five centers. “While we struggle with our inability to worship together in our churches in the usual manner, we view this challenging time as an opportunity to grow spiritually and draw closer to our Catholic faith,” says Most Rev. Kevin Vann, Bishop of Orange. “While our parishes remain physically closed, our pastors and priests continue to minister to their communities via phone, email and social media.” In preparation for Easter and in praying for a swift end to the coronavirus crisis, Bishop Vann prays the Rosary at 4 p.m. Tuesdays in front of the mosaic of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Christ Cathedral. The prayer is livestreamed on Facebook and at Christ CathedralMass.com to Catholic viewers across Orange County and beyond. This year’s Holy Week services will look much different. Palm Sunday will be livestreamed and parishes will distribute blessed palm fronds at a later date. Confessions – the Sacrament of Reconciliation – and Stations of the Cross are cancelled. Candidates for baptism in the Roman Catholic Church – who usually are elected and accepted during the Great Easter Vigil service – will be received into full communion with the church at a later date. Thus Easter Vigil services will be different, although they will still include the Service of Light, the Liturgy of the Word, and the Holy Eucharist. Included will be a virtual Profession of Faith for those already baptized and a spiritual communion since Catholics cannot receive the Holy Eucharist in person. A live webcam broadcasts Christ Cathedral’s Monstrance for Eucharistic Adoration every day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. At Christ Cathedral, livestreamed services for Holy Week Services via livestream (https://parish.christcathedralcalifornia.org/mass-times/) and EWTN include:
    • Holy Thursday, April 9: Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:30 p.m. in English and Spanish

While social isolation is difficult for everyone, the enforced confinement offers faithful Catholics with the opportunity to deepen our spirituality, enhance our prayer life, and study our faith through a host of online opportunities, including audiobooks, books online, podcasts and websites, and television and radio stations. Traditionally, Catholics look forward to giving their Easter Sunday offering to the Church while at Mass. This year, we encourage all Catholics to give generously online via www.rcbo.org/give or supportyourparishoc.org “We encourage families to participate online by sending the Diocese of Orange and Christ Cathedral photos to be posted on our social media channels,” Bishop Vann says. “Watching Mass on our separate devices we are separated by distance but connected through our faith.” About the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange With 1.3 million Catholics, 57 parishes, 5 Catholic centers, and 41 schools, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange is one of the largest and most diverse faith communities in the United States.
