The Blessing of the Holy Oils

The Chrism Mass takes its name from the most eminent of the three holy oils, the Oil of Chrism. Once blessed, these sacred oils will be used in every parish throughout the diocese for the coming year.

“This ceremony is among the most essential liturgies celebrated each year,” said Bishop Vann. “Once blessed, these sacred oils will be used to anoint the sick, baptize catechumens and infants, confirm candidates, ordain priests, and anoint altars.”

The three oils blessed during the Mass are:

  • The Oil of the Sick: Used to anoint all who suffer in mind and body. Through this holy anointing, the sick gain strength, are released from fear, and receive the consolation of faith.
  • The Oil of Catechumens: Reserved for those preparing for baptism. This anointing gives infants and adults coming into the Church the strength to renounce sin and evil as they approach the waters of baptism.
  • The Holy Chrism: This oil is consecrated by the Bishop, who pours balsam into the oil and breathes the Holy Spirit over the mixture. Mixed with fragrant perfume, the Holy Chrism is used to anoint the newly baptized, those receiving confirmation, the hands of new priests and the head of a new bishop, and the altars and walls of new churches at their dedications.
