December 17, 2020 at 2:17 am
The Diocese of Orange confirms today that Bishop Kevin W. Vann has tested positive for COVID-19. Prior to receiving his test results, Bishop Vann began the quarantine process and will continue serving the Catholics of the Diocese of Orange remotely from his private home. His case is currently reported as mild, no fever has been reported and he remains in contact with his health care providers as needed. We anticipate a speedy recovery. Initial contact tracing indicates that Bishop Vann may have come in contact with the virus from a member of his support team. All those whom Bishop was in close contact with have been notified, as per Diocesan and public health protocols. Bishop Vann would like to remind the public to take any and all steps necessary to protect themselves and their families. The Clergy of the Diocese will also continue to exercise precautions and follow the Orange County Health Care Agency guidelines. The Bishop has cancelled all in-person events and appearances and will not resume his normal activities until cleared by his physician. The Diocese asks that everyone keep Bishop Vann, our health care providers and those who have COVID-19 in your prayers. Pray for their speedy recovery, invoking the intercession of Servant of God Chiara Lubich, foundress of the Focolare movement, to whom Bishop has devotion. Bishop Vann, as well as Bishop Thanh Thai Nguyen and Bishop Timothy Freyer, would also like to remind Catholics that they and other Bishops from the California Catholic Conference find the currently available vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna to be morally acceptable as publicly stated by the California Catholic Conference of Bishops along with Catholic health care systems and Catholic Charities.
